IES LP-8 – Lighting Practice: The Commissioning Process Applied to Lighting and Control Systems

The lighting design intent should be monitored throughout the entire construction process, particularly in the final installation. The correct luminaires, light sources, drivers, ballasts, and controls should be properly installed and perform according to criteria that achieve user acceptance and satisfy the owner?s operational needs. Commissioning describes a process undertaken to achieve this goal for buildings and their systems, including lighting. It is a quality assurance process used to verify that buildings and their installed systems satisfy owner and designer performance criteria initially and throughout the life of the building. This document, developed by the Illuminating Engineering Society in association with the Lighting Controls Association, describes the technical requirements for commissioning lighting and control systems to achieve owner performance criteria in new construction. Retro-commissioning, or application of the commissioning process to an existing facility that has not previously been commissioned, is not specifically addressed in this document, although the same basic process can be applied.
